Match report Back Down to Earth With a Bump

Turning back to the league, the Blaze travelled east again to play by the sea at Westcliff. It was a mild but windy day as the game commenced. Belhus won the toss and elected to bat. A strong cross wind made conditions very difficult and some variable bounce meant it was difficult to score. Unfortunately, most players made a start but only one adapted to the conditions and found some success. Rayyan Kamran made 19 in his innings, mostly coming from very clever running, especially from shots behind the stumps. A quick call and a fast run put pressure on the fielders and Rayyan made the most of the time the ball was in the outfield. On balance, a score of 84 felt reasonable, given the track and the gusting winds.

So all to play for when the team came out to bowl in the second innings. The strong wind that the Blaze players had to content with suddenly dissipated and the Westcliff batters were able to take advantage of the more favourable conditions. However, the team were severely hampered in their defence by conceding 28 runs in wides and 10 in no balls were conceded through the next 20 overs, which meant the team were always on the back foot. Added to this were many mistakes in the field that resulted in a high number of boundaries that really boosted the oppositions score. The final result reflected this perfectly as Belhus lost the game by 80 runs. Some of this was simply better batting bit at least half can be attributed to the higher number of extras and inability to stop the ball on the outfield. Although it was a heavy defeat it was also just a 'bad day at the office' for the Belhus players. The team remains capable and is still enjoying their cricket and can work on the learning points in training.

We will come back stronger for our next game, which is back on home territory, this coming Sunday.
