Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) v Stanford-le-Hope Sabres U9 on Sun 14 Jul 2024 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 59 Runs

Match report The date was Sunday 14th July and a warm sunny morning began at North Stifford with the Hurricanes hosting the Stanford Sabres. The rare sight of a full 10 players were ready to play for the home team. The Sabres won the toss and put the Hurricanes into bat.

First to walk out were Maya Jagannathan and Tharak Panjala. Sadly, neither troubled the scorers and both lost a wicket during their twelve balls, which means the score was effectively -6 when they made way for the next batting pair. Leo Picconi and Alfie Saunders fared much better. A great knock from Leo amassed 13 runs from 12 balls, bringing his total for the season so far to 29, already better than the entirety of the previous season. Alfie scored a single and protected his wicket well. The third pair comprised of Thomas Arnold and Ethan Lucey; the former captaining the side for the first time. This was a reward for performing so well at the previous training session. Players are awarded recognition for applying the most concentration and making the most of training. They are given a trophy to take home for the week and this, as well as the effort in training seemed to have the desired effect as he scored an excellent 11 from his 12 balls. This didn’t just comprise of boundaries but also by taking advantage of loose fielding from the opposition in the form of overthrows. Unfortunately, Ethan did less well and couldn’t pierce the field to score any runs. The penultimate pair was Arthur Saleem and Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez. Arthur scored a creditable 5 runs but Oscar found the quality of the bowling and the inconsistency of the bounce on the pitch too difficult to score on. The Hurricanes final pair of Eesa Naveed and Muhammed Ibrahim experienced similar difficulties. They scored 1 run but lost three wickets between them. Together with the 51 runs as extras from wides, no balls, byes and an unusual leg bye, the team finished on 264 (200 + [82-18]).

During the break both teams enjoyed some refreshment and some snacks that were very well received. Soon enough it was time for the Sabres to make their reply.

To borrow the football cliché, it was an innings of two halves. The bowlers’ economy rate was good in the first 10 overs with Maya and Tharak showing some noticeable improvements in accuracy. Leo and Alfie bowled well but conceded 27 runs against batters who quickly got the measure of what they were facing. Alfie picked up one of the two wickets taken by the Hurricanes bowling attack. Thomas and Ethan were next with the ball in-hand and the batters were able to pick out enough deliveries to be able to keep the score ticking over. At this point the game was poised and very close. However, the final 8 overs of the match saw the Sabres step up a gear in terms of the quality of their batting. The bowling pairs of Arthur and Oscar and then Ibrahim an Eesa were give short shrift and a succession of boundaries were struck. The batters Frank Street, Blake Barker and James Stannard were in fine form and scored 19, 13 and an enormous 27 runs respectively. Many of these runs came from slips of concentration in the field. The most acute of those came from a shot worthy of 2 runs. Those runs eventually became 9 runs after two overthrows, the latter eventually rolling over the boundary! The Sabres finished with 323 (200 + [135-12]).

So, another disappointing morning for the Hurricanes. The fundamentals of the game were not applied consistently, and instances of good batting or bowling were let down by other examples of patchy fielding and the concession of too many extras. This game saw the Hurricanes give away fewer extras than the Sabres but the latter's ability to score runs and keep fielding pressure on our batters meant they won the day by 59 runs. Congratulations to the Sabres. On a positive note, the award for Hurricanes player of the match went to Eesa who was observed working hard in the field and backing up very well. Well done Eesa! An example for the squad to emulate in future games.

The coaches will seek to address the areas that would most benefit from improvement in the coming weeks and this, together with some practice at home, shall soon make the Hurricanes a force to be reckoned with.
