Benfleet Buccaneers U9 v Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) on Sun 09 Jun 2024 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 14 Runs

Match report It was a cool and windy start to the day when the opening pair for Belhus strode towards the square to face Benfleet Buccaneers. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes could only muster eight players for the match, but this was sufficient for the game to go ahead as a friendly. The team were grateful for two of the Under 11s team members, Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez and Musa Mahmoud for stepping in and doing their best for their former team. Maya Jagannathan, who had been practicing hard all week was rewarded with the captaincy. After losing the toss against Sophie List, the Buccaneers’ captain, walked out to bat and faced the first over of the innings in partnership with Tharak Panjala. Runs off the bat were hard to come by but a number of extras in the form of wides and no balls boosted the score. Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez and Thomas Arnold were the next pair and enjoyed some success. They got bat on ball more often and helped the score tick over. Some good calling and awareness of the field meant they enjoyed some additional runs from overthrows by the opposition. A point observed, discussed and consciously minimised during Benfleet’s innings. Arthur Saleem and Ethan Lucey, arguably the most consistent batting pair for the team so far this season, were next. This time, runs were harder to come by as the quality of the bowling stepped up a notch for the Buccaneers. Some good line and length made getting the ball away more difficult. Some misjudged running resulted in run-outs, but pressure on the fielders added some runs; their pace getting them back into the crease just in time. They managed scores of nine and two respectively. Our two loanees from the Under 11s came into bat next and also found it difficult against good, accurate bowling. They made scores of two and four. As the team were two members short, captain Maya and debutant Thomas were given the opportunity to bat out the remaining overs of the innings. Thomas took his chance and used valuable time in the middle to add to his tally, including scoring the teams only boundary. When the Hurricanes’ innings was complete, they had amassed a score of 282 for the loss of 13 wickets.

After some refreshment generously provided by the Buccaneers, the Hurricane’s took to the field. The Buccaneers made a bright start and scored regularly throughout their innings. However, the Hurricanes worked well as a bowling unit for long periods of the game. Almost all our bowlers claimed wickets from catches, run outs and hitting the stumps. The team also showed magnificent team spirit, not just by backing one another up in the field but giving bowlers plenty of encouragement and celebrating together after every wicket. Despite the effort, the Buccaneers chipped away and scored regularly, and all of their team added runs to their total. Their star batter was their captain, Joseph Park who shone with 21 runs from 12 balls, which included 3 fours. His hard work with the bat paid off and he steered his team to a win. The margin being 14 runs. Congratulations to the Benfleet Buccaneers.

Overall, there was a lot to like about the team’s overall performance and a vast improvement on the heavy defeat of the previous game. The bowling and fielding, in particular. There is still much to be done to improve accuracy, but a good number of deliveries were straight and dangerous for the Buccaneers’ batters. Equally, some of the fielding drills practiced in training were demonstrated during the game and helped to restrict the opposition’s score. Ultimately, the excellent batting from the Buccaneers made the difference, particularly toward the end of their innings. Their six boundaries, including one six, made the difference in comparison to the single four for the Hurricanes. However, if the team continues improving as they have then the next win is surely around the corner.
