Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) v Wickford Wolverines U9 on Sun 12 May 2024 at 10:00
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 25 Runs
Match report
On a sunny morning in North Stifford the Belhus Hurricanes played against the Wickford Wolverines. The spirit was brilliant even before the game, as the Wolverines accepted two of Belhus' extra players to make it 10 v 10. The Hurricanes, captained by Alfie Saunders won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The game started steadily with good cricket from both sides. The opening bowling pair of Maya Jagannathan and Aariz Varin bowled tightly to restrict the opening batting pair to just 7 runs from their first four overs. The next batting pair included David Thoroghgood, who gave the Wolverines some much needed impetus stroking three good boundaries to finish on a score of 16. The next batting pair were the two loanees from the Hurricanes, Tharak Panjala and Riyad Alli. It was their first game of cricket ever and they mustered 2 runs between them in their four overs owing to some good fielding from the Hurricanes (proper) and a wicket for captain Alfie Saunders. Next in for the Wolverines were Ahmaed Kayani and captain Safiya Khan-Jones. Ahmaed played a blistering innings, striking 6 boundaries including 2 big sixes! No surprise Ahmaed finished top-scorer in the whole game with a whopping 29 runs, ably assisted by some good hitting from the Wolverines captain Safiya Khan-Jones, who hit a wonderful 6. The last pair were the Royce brothers (Bobby and Charlie) - they struck a boundary each, although bowlers Eesa Naveed and Ibrahim Muhammad took a wicket apiece to limit the Wolverines run-scoring. The Wolverines finished their innings with a strong total of 286 runs from their 20 overs (200 + [113 - 27]).
The Hurricanes started their innings steadily with Maya Jagannathan and Aariz Varin scoring 2 runs each. Willow Muckle and Aishy Myuran batted next and continued the steady start for the Hurricanes, scoring 5 and 2 respectively. Alfie Saunders and Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez then came in and increased the innings momentum by scoring 6 runs each, including a boundary each. While the Hurricanes batters were scoring at a steady pace, the Wolverines bowled a number of wides and no-balls, giving away many runs to the Hurricanes in the form of extras. Ethan Lucey and Arthur Saleem came in next and increased the innings momentum further, with Ethan Lucey scoring 4 and Arthur Saleem top-scoring for the Hurricanes with 10 runs, including a boundary. The final batting pair were Ibrahim Muhammad and Eesa Naveed, who played some nice shots against a good bowling attack of the Royce brothers. Eesa Naveed managed to hit a boundary off Charlie Royce to take the Hurricanes total to 311 (200 + [117 - 6]), those extras really propping up the total.
So the Belhus Hurricanes emerged winners to notch their first win of the season. The game was played in great spirit and in glorious sunshine. All the best to the Wickford Wolverines for the rest of the season.
