O & T Lions v Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) on Sun 30 Jul 2023 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 9 Runs
Match report
The Belhus Hurricanes' penultimate league game of the season saw a very exciting match against the Orsett & Thurrock Lions in Orsett. The Lions won the toss and elected to bat first in what turned out to be an extremely close game.
The Lions' innings started off slowly largely down to some very tight bowling from Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez, who gave away a miserly 1 run from his 2 overs. Unfortunately, the rest of the Hurricanes bowlers could not follow suit, as the Lions' middle order asserted themselves - Wyatt McArthur top-scored with 18 runs batting at number 5; Franklin Hambelton batting at no. 6 and Zachary Coombes at 7 scored 14 runs each; and by the end of the Lions innings they put on a competitive total of 292 (200 + [107-15]).
The Hurricanes started solidly with openers Muhammad Ibrahim and Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez scoring 8 runs each, which together with 16 extras gave the Hurricanes a healthy start (32 from 4 overs). The Lions then applied the breaks with tight bowling from Faure Botha and Teddy Sopp (conceding 11 and 8 runs respectively). But strong knocks from Leonardo Picconi (10) and Raghavan Muthukumar (15) wrestled back momentum for the Hurricanes, leaving the last pair of Aryan Pokhriyal and Eesa Naveed a target of 25 runs to win from 4 overs. Aryan and Eesa made the perfect start, hitting 11 off the first of these final 4 overs (Aryan striking two boundaries). The target was reduced to 14 runs from 3 overs. With some aggressive running, the final pair scored 6 from the third last over, leaving 8 runs to win from the final two overs, the impetus clearly with the Hurricanes. However, the penultimate over saw the target increase by 1 run (a wide [+2 runs] followed by a wicket [-3 runs]). So, in the end the Hurricanes needed 9 runs to win from the final over, still very much achievable. And when Eesa hit 3 off the first ball the Hurricanes were within touching distance of the Lions' total - 6 runs needed from 5 balls. But then came the final twist of the game...two wickets in two balls! This left the Hurricanes needing an unrealistic 12 runs from 2 balls to win the game, all but securing victory for the Lions. And secure victory they did, conceding only 2 runs from the final 2 balls to register a win by a margin of 9 runs, the Hurricanes finishing with a total of 283 (200 + [101-18]).
It was a topsy-turvy game with a nervy finish and plenty of gasps and cheers from the watching crowd. The game was played in good spirits and enjoyed by (almost) all - it was very well-fought and competitive and included some thrilling moments of crickets. Good luck to the Lions for the rest of the season.
