Rankins v Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) on Sun 16 Jul 2023 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 57 Runs
Match report
In this first game of two in two days the Belhus Hurricanes came up against a strong outfit in the Rankins Vipers. The match programme (yes, there was a match programme!) included an interview with Vipers captain Zac, who when asked "Are we going to win today?" answered confidently "All day long, we will smash it!" And smash it they did.
The Hurricanes, captained for the first time by Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez, won the toss and elected to bat. The bowling attack of the Vipers was very strong and none of the Hurricane batters got into double figures. The Vipers also took regular wickets and their bowlers were supported by some excellent fielding, with a number of catches taken. The Hurricanes ended up posting 243 runs (200 + [64-21]).
The Vipers started their batting innings slowly, losing a wicket with the first ball of Alfie Saunders. The game was well-poised up until the half way point of their innings, but the Vipers middle and lower order batted aggressively with some very astute running between the wickets and the loss of very few wickets. in the end the Vipers posted on 300 (200 + [112-12]). The pick of the Hurricanes bowlers was Leonardo Picconi who finished with figures of 2-10 of his two overs.
So the Vipers won resoundingly by 57 runs. The next game for the Hurricanes comes hot on the heels against the Belhus Fireflies.
