Chelmsford 5th XI v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 01 Aug 2009 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 104 Runs
Match report
Chelmsford 5th 263-3 dec
Belhus 4th 159 all out
The top two teams in the Shepherd Neame League division 16 met for the second time, on this occasion at Chelmer Park. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, but Chelmsford were off to the worst possible start when opener Peter Marshall was dismissed by the very first ball of the day, caught by Barry Ruck at gully off the bowling of his skipper, Paul Whitlock. Fortunes then changed dramatically as Liam Thrift joined Angus Turner and these two put on 142 for the second wicket, until Turner was trapped leg before by Cliff Cansdale for 77 from 104 deliveries. Thrift went on to score a fine maiden century from 120 balls in a knock which included thirteen boundaries. As soon as Thrift became a centurian, the declaration came after 48.1 overs.
After tea, the Belhus batting fell away at about the same rate as the barometric pressure, with the visitors tottering at 36-7. However, veteran Don East arrived at the crease and deployed all his experience in accumulating a fine undefeated 68 at number nine. Like Thrift in the first innings, East also hit thirteen fours and went on to share an eighth-wicket partnership of 60 with Whitlock, who contributed 27. A further 45 runs were added by East and Cansdale for the ninth wicket but in the end Chelmsford emerged as worthy winners.
