High Roding v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 21 May 2023 at 1.00pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 38 Runs
Match report
Belhus 197
High Roding 159
Travelling to the picturesque ground at High Roding, and electing to bat first in the National Village Cup 4th round match, a 40-over competition, Belhus made a good start as the first five overs yielded 30 runs until Matt Doran was somewhat unlucky to hit a firm clip to square leg to be caught for a dozen. The introduction of the 2nd string bowlers especially Townsend saw runs harder to come by as the wicket plugged somewhat. At 142 for 3 off 28 overs with Joe Joyce still at the crease, a 200 plus score looked likely but unfortunately Joyce fell to a catch at point to one that stopped slightly for a good 80. Chris Didd chipped in with 14 and it was left to Roy Heffernan to marshall the rest of the order with a patient 37 until he was last out with 10 balls remaining. Young Alex Blake (11) and Dylan Sinfield (14) making double figure contributions towards the latter stages of the innings. Belhus closing on perhaps a dis-appointing but nevertheless competitive 197 all out. Best of the High Roding bowling came from Chris Townsend with 2 for just 19 runs off his allotted 8 overs and Joe Murphy 2 for 38 off 7.2 overs.
In the High Roding reply, Belhus made an early breakthrough as young Dylan Sinfield produced a good yorker to trap opener Townsend plumb in front for 2. Wickets fell steadily as the home side slumped to 67 for 4 and later 100 for 6 but a 7th wicket stand of of 35 brought High Roding back into the game as the bowlers struggled as the dangerous Tom Cherry made a hard-hit 66. At 141 for 6 with 10 overs left and a stand evolving the game was poised but 4 good catches in the deep, first by Andy Williams, Dylan Sinfield (his went like a tracer bullet) Joe Joyce diving full length at deep mid-on and finally Mat Doran to catch Cherry at long on turned the game and Belhus made it through in a closer game than the score suggested. The last 3 High Roding wickets fell for just 16 runs for a win by 38 runs. For Belhus, Teddy Waters helped turn the game with 4 for 39 and Joe Joyce a miserly 3 for 11 off 6.5 overs. Well played Belhus.
Thanks especially to Julie for scoring and to High Roding for a lovely tea. We now move on to the Regional Final on the 4th June v Bentley.
