Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Ongar on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 1pm

Match report
Belhus lost the toss again and were asked to field. The bowling was tight with the first 3 overs being maidens. The first wicket to fall came from an attempted pull shot which lobbed up to mid wicket in the 4th over and was the result of not alot of scoring oportunities before. This theme continued with the Ongar batsmen not getting many loose deliveries to play. Coles played well at number 3but was eventually out for 41 in the 38th over with the score on 90 for 5. Jas Chagger batted patiently for 42 but when he tried to be more expansive and push the score on holed out to mid wicket. At the end of the 52nd over the score was 155 for 8 and the Ongar captain decided to bat on and so forefeited the 4 batting points gained at that time.
For one or two overs Belhus lost their way but then attacked to try and get the final 2 wickets as it was becoming obvious that it would be the only way for our batsmen to get in. Stolworthy scored 33 at number 10 before being bowled by Kevin Harber and then Adcock continued to resist the Belhus bowlers, taking the score to 211, before the last wicket fell LBW again to Harber at the end of the 64th over. A superb effort on an extremely hot day with Kevin Harber the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 23 overs 10 maidens 6 wickets for 47 runs. A quick tea was taken by the Belhus early order takink on plenty of fluids. We already calculated that only 16 overs were going to be bowled by the time the last 20 were called by the umpires. With Ongar probably bowling the miserly Blake Hall from one end we knew the other end had to be attacked. And so at the start of the last 20 overs one wicket had fallen and no risks had been taken by the Belhus batsmen, with the score on 61. 152 required from 120 balls. From then on both batsmen attacked the bowlers. Abbott was replaced by Shuttleworth and this over cost Ongar 18 runs and was instantly withdrawn from the attack. Bagga introduced himself with left arm spin from around the wicket but did little to stem the flow of runs. 29 more runs needed from 24 balls with Abbott again bowling with Hall. This is where the game changed with only 14 runs being scored from the next 3 overs. This left 15 to win off the last. A wide first ball and the 10 from the next 5 balls, leaving 4 to win from the last delivery. 9 fielders were posted to the boundary by Bagga. A thick edge was only managed resulting in 2 runs down to third man and so Belhus finished 2 runs short of victory. To everybody at the Green watching and not playing they all enjoyed watching a game of entertaining cricket. To the Belhus team, it was points lost and a lesson learned.
