Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v SOUTHEND-ON-SEA* on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets
Match report
Southend won the toss and chose to bat first. They soon showed their attacking intent with Tom Kenton being particularly aggressive with his shots. The ball was also beating the bat in between the regular runs and there were also quite a few shots that went in the air but didn't go quite to hand. The first wicket fell on 130 when Michael Fogg stumped Kenton off the bowling of Kevin Harber. Steve Johnson came in next and looked very vulnerable early in his innings. However he survived a period of bowling that brought the run rate down with Phil McIntosh at the other end beginning to bog himself down. Johnson began to score well but McIntosh was still struggling to score compared to when he was batting with Kenton. The innings finally finished on 275 for 2 with McIntosh ending 113 not out. Good ground fielding along the rope by Gavin Jefferies and Roy Heffernan probably saved 20-30 runs and a very tight spell of 5 overs for 11 runs by Billy Winter had kept the total within sight. Belhus left the field for tea extremely upbeat considering what had just gone on.
It was made clear that a draw was not going to be accepted and the batsmen slowly went about their task. Wickets were being lost but a worthwhile partnership was always made. The run rate was gradually improving up to 5 an over and momentum in the innings was always moving forward. A target of around 150 at the start of the last 20 overs was now looking promising and we were only 10 runs shy when the last 20 was called with the loss of 5 wickets. It was decided to push Scott Bayford up the order and he went in at the loss of the 6th wicket. In his own style he started to attack the bowling, ably assisted by Mike Cansdale and these two took the score to within 2 runs of the win when Cansdale was caught. With the scores level and the field close in, Bayford lifted the ball over the top for 4 runs, bringing up his 50 and winning the game with 9 balls remaining.
