Southend-on-Sea v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 03 May 2009 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets
Match report
Southend 1st 205-8
Belhus 1st 207-2
Gavin Jefferies of Belhus hit his maiden century at Southchurch Park in the Essex Sunday League as he struck ten fours and one superb six over extra cover on his way to an undefeated 101. He shared an undefeated third wicket partnership of 127 with Roy Heffernan, who made 63 which included eight fours and one maximum. Earlier, Khan, 43, and Chambers, 47, had put on 94 for the second wicket for the home side and with further contributions from Calloway, 32, Kenton, 23 and Elliott 26 not out, Southend closed at tea on a healthy 205 for the loss of eight wickets.
Young leg spinner Owen Jefferies made his first eleven Sunday league debut and returned impressive figures of 2-32 from eight overs. There were also other good performances with the ball too from Ian Havard, who conceded just 15 runs from eight overs (one wicket, two maidens), while Michael Cansdale took his weekend's wicket tally to eight with 4-41, also from eight overs that included three wickets in his seventh over as Southend lost four wickets for just one run, sliding at one stage from 172-4 to 173-8. Ricki Ellis helped build the slide with a run out from the boundary straight into wicketkeeper Steve Huckstepp's gloves. After tea, aiding Gavin Jefferies and Heffernan with the bat were Billy Winter and Cansdale, both trapped leg before with 19 and 10 respectively. For Southend, wickets were taken by Gilroy, 1-41 and Horn 1-17, both from eight overs.
