Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Stratford Weslyans on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Belhus held out for a draw against a strong Stratford outfit on a slow, low track at South Ockendon Rec. The visitors won the toss and batted. Paul Hall and Ricki Ellis took the new ball for Belhus and started well. Hall struck first via a smart gully catch by Jim Robertson. Ellis bowled well with little fortune and it took the introduction of John Forrest (2 wickets) to make further inroads, the first of which being a fine one handed catch by Barry Ruck. Stratford did up the ante with the bat in the second half of the innings and were good value for their total of 178-6. Daniel Dreher and Mike Squires picked up a wicket a piece for Belhus.
After tea, Belhus needed a good start if they were to overhaul the target they had been set. Sadly this did not materialise as the quick loss of openers Barry Ruck (0) and Peter Clark (2) had Belhus reeling at 2-2. Daniel Dreher (4) quickly followed with the score at just 9.
Belhus were thus indebted to Jim Robertson who held firm for a solid innings of 60 from 81 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes). Robertson found support from John Forrest (12) and Don East (16) which appeared to have removed any thoughts of defeat. However when a fatigued Robertson was bowled the sixth Belhus wicket had fallen with seven overs remaining. Drama ensued as Jack Pantelli and Darren Wells fell for ducks and the last over was reached with Mike Squires and Paul Hall at the crease and two wickets remaining. Skipper Hall was bowled on the fifth ball of the final over leaving number 11 Ricki Ellis to face the final ball of the match knowing that Belhus would lose if he was dismissed. With the entire opposition around the bat, Ellis crashed the ball nonchantly into the covers to secure a draw for the home side.
