Belhus started the 2009 cricket season in a strong vein as Tom Thompson and Barry Ruck piled on a 105-run opening partnership at North Stifford on Easter Saturday. New captain Tom Thompson was the architect leading from the front with a fine undefeated 55, while Barry Ruck aided and abetted with 44. A heavy rainstorm triggered an early tea and tactful declaration leaving Sidcup thirty overs to build up their run-chase. A collapse to 32 for five wickets was not in their script as opening bat Ray Hole cut a Connor Day delivery straight into the hands of Danny Norris at point for just three runs, while this year's fourth eleven captain Paul Whitlock claimed two wickets, that of Paul Jenkins, caught by Richard Day without score and John Wilson was next to be dismissed, caught at the second attempt by Whitlock off his own bowling for 17. The guile of leg-spinner Owen Jefferies then ripped through the middle order by claiming 3-33 from seven overs, courtesy of a stumping by the athletic Darren Frampton and catches by Harry Levy and Barry Ruck. However, number seven batsman Alex McCawley virtually turned the game on its head with a fine 47 until he was dismissed by a father and son effort - caught by Richard Day off Connor, his son. With Matthew Lewis being run out for 28, all four results were possible as five runs were required from the final over with the last Sidcup pair at the crease. Only one run was conceded by Belhus from this final over, bowled by Danny Norris, until Connor Day gratefully accepted a catch at gully to earn Belhus a 3-run victory. Connor Day finished with 3-38 from eight overs, one of which was a maiden, while Whitlock returned 2-16 from six overs. Norris finished on 1-30.
