Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Stock on Sun 07 May 2023 at 1.00pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 15 Runs
Match report
Belhus 209-7
Stock 194-9
Electing to bat in this 40-over National Village Cup 2nd round game at North Stifford, Belhus did not make the best of starts as opener Chris Didd chased a wide one, Danny Joyce was adjudged in front as too was Roy Heffernan and we reeled at 25 for 3. Young Henry Overy soon followed, nicking off to 1st slip as Belhus slipped to 48 for 4. Captain Joe Joyce then found himself with veteran Wayne Read who proved a good ally as the 5th wicket partnership realised 66 runs before Wayne was stumped 2nd attempt, not moving his foot back after the first attempt! Joe Joyce soon followed to a very good ball that dipped and swung to be bowled for a good half century. Lewis Blake followed to a similar delivery and was adjudged in front to leave Belhus on 136 for 7. Dylan Sinfield then joined Andrew Williams who was helped by defensive field placings and proceeded to bat and run well to push the final score to a respectable and competitive 209 for 7 in a final stand of 73, perhaps a bit less than Belhus would have liked in an under-par score. Well played to Andy and Dylan.
In reply, Belhus made an early breakthrough thanks to a Henry Overy in-swinging Yorker. At 90 for 3 off 17 overs Stock were well placed. The forth wkt partnership between Raeburn and Chelgadura started to blossom as an away win now looked likely. However the game was turned by a string of good catches. First a Roy Heffernan wide longhop saw Chelgadura hit one to a diving Teddy Waters to take a great catch. Clark was then caught by young Tyler with his arms completely outstretched and diving full length and finally a good Danny Joyce catch to a "steepler" on the boundary to remove the threatening Rideout. Veteran Wayne read also took a catch to remove the mainstay of the Stock innings Raeburn at point for a well made 64 until he seemed to expire!!
In addition, a suicidal run out via a good Henry Overy throw from the boundary saw the Stock innings implode as the run rate rose to over 10 an over. Belhus became eventual winners by 15 runs. A match played in fine spirits. Well played Belhus, but too many wides-on both sides 27 v 28. Best bowling for Belhus was Joe Joyce 2-25 and young Teddy Walters who was very economical with 2 for 21.
Thanks to all officials and the Sinfield family for a great tea and "feeding of the 5,000"! We now have another round on 21st May away to High Roding. Good luck for that.
