Match report
SECPG Finals Day - U11s Final v Westcliff On Sea
Well, the day is finally here.
A day that back in April had you asked the rookie coaching partnership of Glenn and Ryan, they would’ve dreamt of, but not believed could happen.
It’s finals day……and although for myself I actually got some sleep on Saturday night (unlike before the semi final), it’s still a day where nerves kick in.
After getting to the ground at what seemed like silly o'clock (it was only 7:50, but added for dramatic effect) it was time to welcome all of the lads and parents for our last game of the season.
Once everyone was there we set about the plan for the game. The plan was simple, play like we did in the semi final……….and TRY TO WIN, but ultimately go out and have fun.
For the second game in a row Belhus won the toss and skipper Oliver decided to bat. The lads were comfortable with this and as the umpires rang the bell for start of play, openers Will and Harvey took to the big stage.
Both lads gave us a good start and the platform we needed to build on. Will was quick between the wickets and ran several singles. Harvey was similar but also hit a superb boundary (which I think is his first) and also scored his highest innings of the season so far.
Next to the crease were John and Charlie. The boys tried to continue the start we made and both picked up several singles themselves, during this time we lost a couple of wickets through no fault of the lads. One was a superb catch and the other some excellent fielding by Westcliff to get a run out.
Batting at 5 in the final was Lewys. That’s seemed to be a new spot for him after some good performances of late. He faced some excellent bowling in the final so had to play some defensive shots, getting 10 dots and 2 singles from his 12 balls.
George and Reuben came to the crease next and both batted with the freedom we have seen all season. Running quick singles and bludgeoning boundaries galore. George finishing with 14 and Reuben 12.
Batting at 8 for the second game in a row was skipper Oli and with Oli, we know what we are going to get. Balls that when they get hit, they STAY hit!! Oli picked up a quick fire 17 that included a huge 6 to the leg side boundary. Oli should’ve actually got a 12 for that shot because for those that know the ground at North Stifford that well, will know that under a tree in front of the houses on the leg side, there is actually a football goal. Oli hit his 6 so far and with so much precision that the ball ended up in the net too!
The final two batsmen were Aryan and Vansh……or as we now like to call them, “the reason why Belhus Men’s player Ryan Wells had a heart attack during our semi final” after he witnessed their running between the wickets for the first time.
Both of the lads finished their season with the bat the way they have played all year. The ran single after single after single, all mixed in with a couple of boundaries each. The one surprise during their batting was actually a wicket we conceded where Vansh played a wonderful straight drive back over the bowler's head which looked like it would be a one bounce and then four, but the Westcliff fielder, fter some juggling, managed to hold on and take a great catch.
Once the innings was over, we finished on 137/9 which is a net score of 110 runs. For any game that’s a great score, for a final it’s blooming fantastic.
We took the lads into the sheds at the break, told them to have a drink, sat them down so they could calm down a little after the the exploits with the bat and made sure we only went back out into the field once everyone was ready.
We set about the bowling in the same way we did on Tuesday. Lewys and John so we had a mix of experience and pace. Westcliff tho set about their chase very well, and after the first four overs were Net 33 in their chase. The lads hadn’t bowled badly at all, as we picked up a wicket from John after he bowled his opponent and also had a run out from great work by George in the deep.
This theme continued over the next four overs too where Westcliff were putting a lot of runs on the board but we were picking up a couple of wickets. Harvey and Charlie were bowling during this period and through no fault of their own the score kept increasing. Charlie also picked up two wonderful wickets tho both times bowling his opposite number which a superb display. Will and Aryan were brought on to bowl the middle overs and again the same theme appeared to be taking place, great bowling but excellent batting to pick up runs.
By the midpoint of the innings, Westcliff were 83/5 which was a net score of 68. They needed 43 net to win and I’ll be honest and say, I thought they were going to get this with ease.
That’s not a negative on our lads, just the way the game looked like it was going to pan out.
What happened next should have a film made about it and I’m just gutted we haven’t got a video of it……..
Will had his second over and again bowled well. He then went back to his position behind the wicketkeeper for the rest of the game and became very, very involved on how this game panned out.
Overs 10, 12 and 14 from Aryan picked up 4 run outs. Which is where the game changed.
We were giving ourselves a chance as some excellent work between the fielders and skipper Oli at keeper, we were taking the wickets with aplomb.
During Aryan’s 3 overs he only conceded 10 runs, he himself got no wickets but the 4 run outs were wonderful.
The final 6 overs were bowled by Vansh, Reuben and George, three of our quickest bowlers in the team. These overs picked up another 6 wickets also, which was a mixture of 3 run outs and 3 bowled wickets by Vansh (1) and Reuben (2).
With the final over to come Westcliff we’re on 88 net, so needed 22 from the final 6 balls. Although the game wasn’t over, a few smiles were had by the parents, players from the other age groups and also ourselves as coaches.
Westcliff could only manage 9 runs with a loss of one wicket from that over, so when we restricted them to one single of the last ball, cue to jubilant scenes on and off the pitch where we all celebrated a wonderful win……a win that at the half way stage looked impossible!
During that last 10 overs we restricted Westcliff to a net score of just 26 which by anyone’s standards is phenomenal
After showing the correct sportsmanship to Westcliff and shaking hands etc, we once again went back to the changing rooms to have a very brief chat. By the time the coaches got in there the woooooping and hollering had already began, and it was great to see some of the lads not picked in the team in there too, joining in the celebrations.
Then it was trophy time…….led by skipper Oli Davy, the boys all went up one by one to collect their trophies and pick up The John Wade Trophy for the SEDCB U11s Champions for 2021!
This was a superb achievement only heightened a little while later when we found out that we are the first Belhus U11s to win the trophy!
After all the pics were done etc and the parents had been moved back behind the now moved boundary ahead of the other games to be played after us, I found myself in the changing rooms alone with Lewys and I must admit, that moment was wonderful and almost tearful.
I personally was coached football by my dad at a young age, and have always wanted to do similar for Lewys at some point, but with work commitments etc that’s not been possible. I also lost my dad at a young age so being able to share that with Lewys was amazing.
So the last few months of being able to fulfil some of that desire and share it with a wonderful group of lads, fellow coaches and supportive parents has truly been wonderful.
Thanks to Glenn for being our wonderful head coach, for bring the fun aspect to training too with the odd Dodgeball game, some music and also water fights, but most importantly showing the way we wanted to play to the lads and let’s be honest……..absolutely smashing this season!
Thanks to Nicola for all the admin stuff she does behind the scenes for us, that’s a hard job and I know one I wouldn't want to do and for sorting out all the gift bags etc the boys had recently.
To Rob, Callum, Henry and Aidan for assisting us in training and games this season.
To Martin Healy for the wonderfully made cups of coffee and bacon rolls on our home Sunday matches, we thank you too.
To our youth cricket guru in Jim. It’s been a pleasure this season to work under your guidance mate, and hopefully will continue for many years to come.
Thank you to the U11s parents for ferrying your lads to training and matches, there have been tough times I know, as at one point I think we had something like 6 games in 14/15 days.
Finally to the boys themselves, none of them have caused us any issues. They have all been well behaved, have all developed their skills from when they turned up on that first session to finishing now in September and are all now becoming excellent young cricketers.
I will leave you with this point, on my last U11s match report……….the last few years have been very tough on everybody, but this season for me has been a light in all that and Sunday was the icing on the cake.
Much Love and kindest regards
