Belhus Cricket Club Won by 18 Runs

Match report League Semi Final v Leigh-on-Sea 31st August 2021……

The build up to this game started at about 12:15 on Sunday 29th August when Belhus U13s won their semi final and therefore qualified for Finals Day just like the U15s.

Several parents and players from the older teams came forward and offered us their support ahead of Tuesdays game and a few even jokingly said “no pressure”, hinting that all the focus was now on our U11s to make it a clean sweep of Belhus teams in the final.

Although this was obviously tongue in cheek, I know that I personally felt the pressure and had a few sleepless nights ahead of tonight’s semi final…….not because I felt we could lose, but simply because I wanted us to win so much.

Fast forward to Tuesday, the nervous energy was there in abundance but having collected Oli earlier in the afternoon and then getting to the ground really early to help prep, my nerves simply went.

As for the game, Oli won the toss and elected to bowl first. It was a mutual decision all round, not least because of the way some of the lads fielded in our exhibition game on Sunday to help defend their target.

Harvey and Will opened the innings for Belhus and both played well. Harvey dug in as much as he could and Will hit his highest innings of the season with an excellent 11 that included two 4s.

Next into bat was John and Charlie. Top nudged a single from his first ball and then faced some excellent bowling as every other ball was a dot. Charlie also got off the mark first ball and added another 3 to his score too.

The third paring was Lewys and George and between them they added 21 off the bat in a partnership including extras of 26.
Both boys have batted a lot together this season and it really shows as Lewys was quick with backing up George on a few singles and their running between the wicket allowed Lewys to pick up a few 2s near the end of his innings too.

Reuben and Oli were in next and these guys bat together the majority of the time and it showed.
They mixed their run scoring up between quick singles and several boundaries too. Oli top scoring on the day with 17 and Reuben getting 12.

The final paring for Belhus was Aryan and Vansh.

The instinct they both have for each other’s game is phenomenal…….even if sometimes their running between the wickets gave the watching on Ryan Wells some heart palpitations.

Off the bat the lads scored 19, but including the Byes etc they added 35 during their innings together which would prove to be key.

Belhus ended on 132 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, giving a net score of 108.

In the sheds at the half way stage the boys were confident but, they were also determined to see this through.

The coaches had decided to open the bowling with a blend of experience with raw pace, so Lewys and John took the first four overs and they did their job only conceding 11 runs between them for the loss of 1 wicket from John, who also got a maiden over too.

Probably two of the most improved players in the squad this year, in Harvey and Will then came on as first change bowlers. Harvey bowled tight and also picked up a great wicket too which was a caught and bowled.
Will not wanting to be out done took two wickets in his first three balls and finished his two overs with incredible figures of 3 for 6 including one stumping from Oli.

Seeing Will bowl a hat trick ball which ended as a wide, Charlie and Aryan fancied a bit of that action too. Both those lads also took two in two during their first overs. Charlie finished with 2 wickets for 18 runs and Aryan had 2 wickets for 11 runs from his 3 overs.

Vansh was then brought into the attack and he kept his lines tight and although he didn’t pick up any wickets, he only conceded 7 runs in two overs.

Picking up the overs at the death were George and Reuben. Both boys bowled wonderfully but faced some time exceptional batting, with the Leigh batsmen adding 41 off the bat in the last 4 overs.

The final 4 overs made the ending a bit more exciting that we would’ve wanted, but when the final ball was done, Belhus claimed an 18 runs victory.

That win sees us join our U13s & U15s at Finals Day on Sunday and at the time of writing this we are yet to find out if that will be against Westcliff or Wickford.

Just one more………one more game of the season left, can we make that one more win too?

Join us on Sunday at 9am to find out!!

Kind Regards
