Upminster v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Sun 20 Jun 2021 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 4 Runs

Match report On a rather dull looking, drizzly June morning Glen, Jim, Ryan and Robert gathered their Belhus U11s for a game against Upminster at Coopers School…….one of which “may” have had a fuzzy head, but it’s all good. It’s the weekend right? :)

Upon arrival we found out that we would be a player short, so we thank Lewis from Upminster for fielding for us in the second half of the game.

Captain Oliver Davy lost the toss (more on him later)…..and Upminster chose to bowl first.

For the second game in a row, we were batting in pairs for 4 overs and not just leaving the field after 12 balls. Additionally the loss of a wicket in this game would be 5 runs and not our usual 3.

Batting first, Harvey and Matthew battled hard and made sure they dug in to not loose many wickets.
They faced two excellent bowlers too, so to only lose one wicket was fantastic.

Next in for Belhus was Will and John. Although they only managed 1 run between them, some of the shots they played were beautiful even if they went straight to fielders.

Their technique was spot on and it’s excellent to see this so early into their cricketing life.

Vansh and George faced the next 4 overs between them and really started to take the game to Upminster.

Vansh playing wonderfully and scoring 9 runs and George making a flashy but controlled 14 which was his highest of the season so far and the highest for Belhus on the day.

Vansh left the field after those 4 overs but George stayed out there as he was to receive another 6 balls to help make up the 12 balls we needed to cover due to being a player short. Lewys then joined George in the middle and he too was going to face 18 balls instead of the usual 12.

After taking a nasty blow to the hand on his first ball, Lewys fought on and managed to add 3 runs to the Belhus total.

The final four overs were again batted by Reuben and Oliver. They have batted wonderfully together in the previous games and this game was no different.

Running well together, taking runs off as many balls as possible to increase the Belhus total as much as possible.

Reuben added 8 to the score and Oliver 13.

Speaking of Oliver, some of you may or may not know he was given a little target recently by both his father Scott and Belhus resident “stato” Ryan.

He needed to achieve 40 runs and 5 wickets over our recent run of 4 games in 8 days. When he dispatched the 5th ball of the final over for a 6, he achieved this goal…….therefore winning the little wager he had on with Scott and Ryan.

I’m soooooo thrilled for him (note the sarcasm)……..

Belhus ended with 100 runs on the board for a loss of 10 wickets, therefore giving a net score of 50.

Belhus set about defending their total with Matthew and Harvey opening the bowling. Both boys again bowled excellently, keeping their lines tight and hard to hit.

John and Will were our first change bowlers and they continued the right lines also. During these four overs we managed to take two wickets, Will taking one with his first ball and the second was a run out on John’s bowling after great fielding by Vansh and 'keeper Oliver.

Next up bowling for Belhus were George and Vansh and just like their batting, the fireworks began. Both boys bowled superbly well, with pace and accuracy.
Between them they took 4 of the Upminster wickets, which included 3 in one over for Vansh.

Lewys (2), Reuben (3) and Oliver (3) then shared the final 8 overs between them and once again Upminster lost 4 wickets during this time.

Lewys as usual taking pace off the ball and proving hard to hit, giving away just 10 runs during his two overs.

Reuben bowled beautifully again and picked up his first wicket of the season. Keeping his lines tight and helping massively to restrict the Upminster total.

In his first over, Oliver picked up two wickets and carried that accuracy through his next over also.

Going into the final over, Upminster needed 9 runs to win (net). They picked up several runs and going into the final ball, they required 3 to win.

They nudged the ball for a single and then while it looked like the game was over they ran a second……..so a tie right???……Wrong!!!

Before the umpires called “over” they tried to run a very risky third even though the ball was in the hands of Oliver at the bowlers wicket. As soon as they ran, Oliver took the bails off the wicket to run out the batsman, therefore taking another Upminster wicket and winning the game for Belhus!

That’s now 4 wins from 5 for the Belhus U11s and was another excellent result against a very very good Upminster team.

And as Jim said after the game, considering the boys have had to miss a few Friday sessions due to rain, they are actually “training” during the matches themselves. However everyone has got on with it and have really progressed fantastically well considering the circumstances.

Kind Regards
Belhus U11s
