Orsett & Thurrock Tigers v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Wed 14 Jul 2021 at 17:30
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 56 Runs
Match report
As I sit in enforced trace and trace isolation, at least I have the pleasure of standing in for the excellent Mr Worley last evening at both scoring and submitting this report. I hope I can do him justice before handing back the reins. So here goes....
At long last in this soggy summer, Belhus U11s got to play with the sun on their backs on a pleasant summer evening as we visited School Lane to play the Orsett and Thurrock Tigers for a friendly match.
Stand in skipper Reuben won the toss and boldly chose to bat first. A nice idea to change tack from the usual approach and an ideal way to use a friendly match. Belhus opened with Joseph and Matthew. Both watched the ball well and batted steadily with no risks taken. Only one wicket was lost from their combined 24 balls which was a good effort against some steady bowling. John batted at 3 and was positive, unfortunately he was run out once but the eagerness and intent to score and run was evident and good to see. Harvey was at number 4 and played exceptionally straight, showing a fine and solid defence - this was very good to see such concentration at a young age - no dismissals for Harvey was good reward for his tenacity.
Will batted at 5 and was his usual busy self, calling well and looking to score and run well. He made 3 without being dismissed. Albert followed at 6, he had to deal with a lot of wides and was unlucky to deflect the ball onto his stumps but he will benefit from another match played being one of our more inexperienced players. Charlie was at 7 and also had a batch of wides in his allotted balls but he also also made a couple of runs for just one dismissal, calling positively as always. George followed at 8 and hit a nice 3 to get off the mark, he too showed good calling and running as he picked up 6 singles and ended his stint with a lovely boundary to total a very useful 13 runs for no dismissals. Reuben was next and also ran well and batted positively making 7 unbeaten. Vansh finished things off with a typically aggressive innings of 21 including four powerful boundaries. Belhus totalled 91 in their 20 overs losing a respectable 5 wickets thus netting the total back to 71.
Credit to our hosts who bowled well, particularly George who bowled 2 successive maidens. There was also 1 wicket apiece for Olly, Harry and Ashton.
So Belhus took the field and continued to show good effort and improvement as they have all season. Matthew and Joseph opened and combined nicely, Joseph was very frugal conceding just 2 no balls and bowling one maiden as he conceded no runs off the bat at all ending with 0 for 4. Matthew, whilst not as miserly, did pick up a wicket as he took 1 for 14. During this spell Vansh made a fine run out to add to the Belhus fine start as the Tigers were 18 for 2 after 4 overs. Will and Harvey took the ball next and both started excellently with Harvey grabbing a wicket maiden and Will making a run out himself. fine achievements for both of them. Will ended up with 0 for 5 and Harvey 1 for 4 to keep the squeeze on for Belhus with Tigers now 28 for 4 after 8 overs.
Reuben and John were next into the attack. Reuben bowled at a fiery pace and was unlucky to end up wicketless as he just went for 5 from his 2 overs. John did grab a wicket and despite a couple of freakishly high no balls ended up with 1 for 8 from his spell. Tigers nudging to 42 for 5 from 12. Charlie and Albert were the next pair to bowl. Charlie entered proceedings with a bang taking a wicket with his first ball followed by another in his first over. His second over was a wicket maiden, assisted by a fine catch from Vansh, as he ended up with fine figures of 3 wickets for 2 runs. Albert was steady and accurate, conceding no runs off the bat and just 6 in total from his 2 overs and these only due to a wide and a couple of no balls - another good lesson learned though re the front foot rule so all good experience. Tigers were now 52 for 8 from 16 overs.
So it was left to George and Vansh to complete the innings. Both bowled impressively with good accuracy and pace. Both started with wicket maidens (George taking 2 victims and Vansh 1). George took another wicket in his second over to end up with fine figures of 3 wickets for 1 run off the bat from his two overs. Spookily, Vansh then took 2 wickets in his second over to end up with identical figures to George. The Tigers ended up with a total of 62 netted back to 20 as they lost 14 wickets. Olly with 6, Tanish and Ashton adding 5 apiece were the highest contributors with the bat for the Tigers.
So another fine win from the young Belhus U11s., 8 wins from 11 games for a team in its first season of matches is a great effort. Everyone is improving and it looks like they are having fun in the process. Plenty still to work on and learn but some very good performances being shown. Well done everyone.
