Benfleet v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Thu 27 May 2021 at 17:30
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 2 Runs
Match report
After a busy day in school for the boys and at work for the parents, 10 of the Belhus U11s “Class of 21” gathered at Woodside Park, Benfleet for what was FINALLY our first game of the season.
Belhus skipper Oliver won the toss and decided to bowl. Gathering the boys in, it was obvious they were excited and ready to go. Oliver and Ronnie opened the bowling and after the first four overs which included a maiden for Oliver, the home team were restricted to 11 runs. Lewys, John, Harvey and Finley kept their lines tight and continued the excellent start the opening bowlers had given us. After 12 overs Benfleet had managed to get 33 runs on the board and here is where the fun began.
George bowled the 13th over and only gave away 1 run. The ball was then tossed to Charlie and with his very first ball he took his maiden wicket on his debut in hardball cricket. He didn’t stop there and took the team's second wicket in his second over. This allowed him to finish with figures of 2 Overs, No Maidens, 2 Wickets for 10 Runs.. Ruben and Alfie maintained the excellent Belhus bowling and finished off the innings for us.
Benfleet had scored a net total of 57 runs after the loss of 2 wickets. So in the chase, Belhus were set a net 58 to win.
Alfie and Ronnie opened the batting and made sure they battled hard and kept their wickets intact. This was followed also by John, Lewys and Finley who all had 12 dot balls each. When Harvey and Charlie came to the crease the running between the wickets really stepped up with both boys very vocal with good calling. At the start of the 15th over George and Ruben came to the crease together and both boys scored 6 runs each. They followed on the excellent work from Harvey and Charlie and made sure their running and calling was positive and clear.
So with 13 balls of the Belhus innings to go, skipper Oliver came to the crease knowing that he had to face 12 of them. After being bowled first ball, Belhus needed 11 runs from the final 12 balls. Despite the setback Oliver showed real character playing a captain's performance scoring 12 runs himself. Belhus got over the line with 2 balls to go, but Oliver had to ensure he didn’t lose his wicket. Thankfully, the last two balls were dots so Belhus came out winners by 2 runs.
A massive well done to all of the lads tonight, everyone stepped up with some key moments. It was especially pleasing to see things that have been worked on in training being brought into a match.
A special mention to Glenn and Ryan who umpired and scored their first matches very smoothly indeed, well done gents. Plus a note of thanks to Alfie from our U9 squad who stepped in at the last minute due to an injury and played his first hard ball match and doing very well to score 2 runs.
Kind Regards.
