Benfleet v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Fri 17 May 2019 at 18:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 7 Wickets
Match report
The Under 11s had a hard-fought game against Benfleet at Woodside Park on Friday evening. Losing the toss, the Under 11s were asked to bat in what was for many, their first 'proper' game of cricket, with the Cup rules having a different rule set to league games. The Benfleet district bowlers made early inroads INto our batting and although Dylan Sinfield provided some resistance to their good bowling with 9 solid runs, we struggled to 22 for 5 off 6 overs. However, as things got easier, runs became easier with Rhys Williams (8) and top-scorer Oliver Davy (14) with two lovely pull shots for 4 put on 34 runs for the 8th wicket. Some excellent, mature calling throughout this partnership was really the highlight of our batting display as we reached a total of 76 all out in 16 overs which, given the start we had, was a remarkable recovery.
The boys took to the field knowing what was required, early wickets and sharp fielding was a must if we were to restrict Benfleet. James and Dylan opened up and bowled tightly. However Benfleet's district main batsman Ben batted well to retire for 25 and Benfleet reached 50 before the first wicket fell. Luke Trotter held on to a blinding catch off the bowling of Oliver Davy at mid on, then 2 wickets in the next 2 overs off the bowling of Austin Medlock and Luke Trotter created a little wobble as Dylan Sinfield made easy work of both catches at mid wicket. Benfleet were then sitting nervously on 65 for 3, some close run out opportunities made things interesting but solid batting by Benfleet's Holly and Maddox ensured Benfleet reached the target after 13 overs and 3 balls.
Overall, aside from a tough batting start, the recovery was excellent. To get another 50 runs for 5 wickets was really pleasing, with some great running and good initiative during a tough period in the game. The bowling and fielding was as good as I’d seen it this year and the boys really gave it a good go. Credit to Benfleet - they had a strong side and a good bunch of players all of whom had more experience than most of our team, and to put up a good match like that considering it was some of the boys' first game in hard ball let alone proper cricket rules, it was good to see and a good learning curve for most. We play Wickford on Sunday in the league - let’s bring the same attitude going forward.
