Match report Belhus visited Chalkwell Park for their first league encounter of the season against Leigh on Sea. An exciting, close fought encounter took place on a bright, breezy morning. Belhus won the toss and batted first. Lewis Blake set the tone with a fine 29 before retiring not out and Robert Healy continued his good early season form making 26 before also retiring. There was steady support from Brandon Millard and Izzy Overy who both made 9 apiece. Leigh bowled well with Mellar the pick of the attack with 1 for 11 from his 3 overs as Belhus totalled 131-5 from their 24 overs.

There was a sense of a close game in the air as the Leigh reply commenced. Kyle Hewson struck an early blow removing Jeacock. Brandon Millard then ran out Collins with a fine direct hit. But Clark (12) and Daniels (25 retired) swung things back towards the home side with a decent partnership. Skipper Henry Overy intervened taking a fine catch to remove the dangerous Clark, giving Owen Williams a wicket. Lewis Blake made another run out and Belhus seemed back in control but once again the game lurched as Burch (17) and Mellar (23*) fought back. A fine spell from Millard applied the brakes and he was rewarded with the wicket of Burch. Tyler Robertson bowled West, and Plunkett ran out Spink to keep the tension bubbling but Mellar remained a threat as Leigh required 12 from the final over for victory. Two boundaries from the first three balls seemingly put Leigh in the box seat but Millard held his young nerve bowling three dot balls to end the innings and seal a narrow Belhus win by just three runs. It was a fine, close game and a definite thumbs up for the new league format.
