Southend-on-Sea & EMT (95 Overs) v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 12.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets
Match report
Belhus played Southend-on-Sea cc on Saturday at Southchurch Park , the site of the famous game in May 1948 between Essex and Australia, where 'Bradman's Invincibles' hit 721 runs on the 1st day. Bradman himself contributed a quick 187 in 2 hours.
Southend chose to bat first on a dry, but patchy wicket under a warm sun. Antonio and Alan Maidment tried manfully to break through, but lady luck wasn't around in the opening exchanges and the two Southend openers , especially Ikram (52) built a platform. Just as frustration was building for Belhus, the introduction of Deepak and his spin did the trick, taking 2 wickets in his first over. Southend then rebuilt through a good 4th wicket partnership of 95 between Sibbons (52) and 63 from 17yr old Mohan who struck the ball with intent. 300 was looking on the cards for the home team but then Keith Dhannie entered the attack and took 4 good wickets for 32 including a brilliant one handed caught and bowled. Top work Keith. Belhus were grateful at tea that 252 had been posted and not a lot more. The bowlers had bowled with little luck but had kept the total to a gettable total on the dry pitch and outfield.
In response, Belhus replied strongly, Heffernan and Dudmish (32) tucking into some wayward bowling. . . cutting and hooking with aplomb. 90 for the 1st wicket was followed up with 90+ for the 2nd wicket through skipper Lewis and Roy Heffernan. Roy Heffernan brought up his hundred with a hooked six into the pavilion which brought rapturous applause. Belhus reached the winning post of 253 with Roy on a Bradmanesque 148 not out. . . how appropriate on the historical, old ground.
