Benfleet v Belhus Cricket Club Under 9 on Sun 05 Aug 2018 at 9.30am
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 91 Runs

Match report With the colts season drawing to a close, Belhus under 9s visited Benfleet In the Final game of the season. The goal was to finish on a high and hopefully secure a win as Benfleet had previously beaten us earlier in the season in a match that I felt we could have and should have won had it been our day.

However, a new day and a baking hot sunny one! Hopefully the boys and girls could come out on top and they were all up for it knowing it was some of theior last games as Under 9s for the club. What unfolded in the next few hours was quite simply superb cricket from a team that has improved and done so well over this year, and I couldn't have been more happier with the overall team performance and contribution from every player in what was probably a record scoring and recording-breaking game for Under 9s at Belhus.

Winning the toss, Captain Ben decided to bowl first. Lewys and William opened the bowling and straight away found success as William clean-bowled their opening batsman off of his last delivery. Lewys bowled a tidy 2 overs only conceding 4 runs including a maiden. Max then continued the great bowling claiming another wicket as newcomer and debutant Austin held a good catch at square leg. Aariyan bowled his usual great lines, giving away nothing in his first over claiming a maiden and then followed that up by clean-bowling their number 3 batsman. He later come back and bowled another great over at the end finishing with figures of 3 overs, 1 wicket for only 5 runs! For a lad who joined the club this year and was new to cricket, I have been very impressed with his consistent good bowling so well done and keep it up next year. Newcomer Austin bowled next and started a little nervously. However after a few deliveries he found his groove and bowled probably the ball of the day to clean bowl their number 5, an amazing delivery and a great way to kick off his first game for the club. He followed up by bowling 2 more overs, probably deserving of another wicket.

The Captain of the year Ben then stepped up and after getting hit for 4 off his 2nd delivery, replied in the best possible way and clean-bowled their number 6 with another great delivery, and after 10 overs into Benfleet's innings, the boys and girls had already taken twice the wickets they did against Benfleet previously. However it wasn't the end yet they still wanted more Oliver and Katy then bowled 6 overs between them. Oliver produced a lovely little delivery to clean bowl one of their tail-end batsman, and bowled 2 accurate overs after putting even more pressure on the batsman. At this point, 6 wickets in I think was the most the team had taken all year, however Katy delivered one final blow taking a well held caught and bowled as she finished with figures of 3 overs, 1 wicket for only 8 runs. Special mention must also go to Oliver and Max who kept wicket brilliantly all game which isn't easy and a further mention to everyone for their ground fielding and backing up - it was the best I had seen all year and it's great to see that even in friendly games such as this. And After 20 overs Benfleet finished on a NET score of 75 for 7 wickets, 6 of which were clean-bowled and 6 bowlers all took a wicket which is the best thing you ever want to see. 54 runs were needed then for the win then, what came next I wasn't expecting..

After some drinks the boys and girls set about the chase, Lewys opened with Aaryian and started in style, Lewys batted the best I had seen him all year smashing 5 boundaries to all parts of the ground, scoring 21 runs and never looked like getting out, his running was great once again with Aaryian who hit a lovely boundary and after some good calling were 230 after 5 overs, no wickets lost and already half the score gained, the perfect start and this set the tone for the whole innings. Max batted 3 and scored 9 runs, running some nice singles and hitting a lovely pull shot for four. He enjoyed batting with Austin who scored 12 runs, 2 boundaries and one was a lovely sweep shot past the wicket keeper. The boundaries were flying in and the opposition weren't even bowling badly - they only bowled 8 wides in 20 overs. Austin and Max got the total up past 250 and still with no wickets lost. What happened next was borderline carnage. In walked Ben and Oliver and together shared 44 runs between the two of them, Oliver scoring a whopping 23 runs including 3 x 4s and one massive six that went over onto the other pitch where Benfleet Under 11s were playing - a remarkable strike and a cheeky little smirk after is always good to see. Ben himself scored 21 including 3 boundaries and a stylish pull shot to finish his 15 balls, a classy little innings. When these two had retired, the score was well beyond 290. However a few wickets had been lost in the process. William then was joined with Katy and the run scoring continued, William hit the ball clean, hard, and far scoring 4 boundaries and credit must also be said, he has been consistent all year scoring double figures most games and rarely getting out, well done Will. Katy Finished off the onslaught scoring 13 and hitting a lovely shot past myself at square leg for 4 to put the cherry on top of what was an extraordinary batting display. I am unsure of what records are held with the Under 9s, but in my time of playing I haven't seen that many runs scored before - a NET total of 155 runs for 4 wickets finishing on 143 runs. The winning margin by 91 runs which surely has got to be close to a record of A winning margin as well. What was best to see of this day is that every single player contributed massively and it was the perfect way to round off the season.

There is still the Charity Day on the 19th August where medals and Player Awards will be presented, so make sure you get yourself down on the day as the boys will be playing some small mini tournament matches and it will be a great day and a round up of what was, an excellent season for the under 9s, well played boys and girls once again and I look forward to the charity day and the Lads vs Parents match in the next few weeks.
