Benfleet v Belhus Cricket Club Under 9 on Sun 01 Jul 2018 at 9.30am
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 8 Runs

Match report On another beautiful Sunday morning, Belhus Under 9s visited Benfleet for their 4th league game of the season.

Captain on the day Ben lost the toss for the first time and was asked to bat first. Debutant John Coshell opened the batting with Aaryian in the new format of 15 balls per batsman and began the innings well despite the early run out where I don't think John quite understood the concept of a match in comparison to training! Aaryian ran well with John, calling nicely and made it easy for him scoring a nice 6 and John scoring 4 singles. With and a NET score of 220 when the two had finished I thought it was a very good start. Lewys and Rhys then entered at numbers 3 + 4 and this was when the momentum kicked in. Rhys played probably the innings of the year so far scoring 17 runs including 3 boundaries and really put the pressure on the Benfleet bowlers. Lewys ran well with him scoring some nice singles and once again ran well between the wickets, And at roughly a NET score of 235 having only lost 1 wicket I thought we were in a fantastic position after 7 overs or so. However, the next few overs Benfleet bowled really well I thought, and the runs were harder to come by. Oliver and Ben batted sensibly and even though Ben got out early, he played some nice shots including hitting one right past me at square leg for 4. Oliver found things a little harder this week with better bowlers bowling at him but kept his head and didn't give away his wicket often, that period for Benfleet I thought put a dent in us but William recovered the innings very well scoring 14 runs including 3 boundaries and showed he can use his head when he thinks about things, he was very unlucky to get out at the end just before his 15 balls were up but nevertheless batted very nicely and got us back in the game. Katy Sullivan batted last and probably had one of the better bowlers in this Under 9s league bowling at her. He bowled at good pace for his age and bowled very full and it worked for him as Katy was unlucky to get out 3 times to him in her 15 balls. Saying that, I thought she did well as I'd imagined he would get quite a few wickets most weeks so it's not something to feel bad about at all.

After 18 overs we finished on a NET score of 297, however lost 9 wickets which in this new format equalled -27 runs, this was the most wickets that we had lost all year in fact it doubled the regular amount of wickets we usually lose most weeks and with a total of 70 for Benfleet to get I thought the Boys and Girls would need to bowl and field extremely well in order to come out on top.

After a little drinks break, the boys and girls took the field to defend 70 runs. A good start would set the tone and Lewys and John did just that and after their 4 overs had finished, Benfleet were on a total of 217, 3 runs behind us at that stage. Wickets weren't necessary as long as the runs were kept at a minimum and that seemed to be working at first, Benfleet were behind us the whole way in terms of runs as Aaryian and Will bowled a nice 4 overs only conceding 15 runs in there 4 overs. Oliver and Ben bowled next and this is when things started to shift our way as Ben bowled a lovely 2 overs, taking 2 wickets both clean bowled and Oliver bowling incredibly straight making sure if any Benfleet players made a mistake he was going be rewarded. Ben and ollies 4 overs only conceded 16 runs including 2 very much needed wickets, Pressure was then back on Benfleet as they were again behind us by 26 runs at the 12 over stage. The next period was a combination of good batting by Benfleet and some poor luck. Benfleet rode their luck as they knew they still needed to get 37 runs more complete runs in the next 8 overs. Rhys was unfortunate not to get wickets as the ball was hit multiple times and was just was out of reach of Will at mid wicket, and he had a good chance for a caught and bowled however just couldnt hang on to it. Katy Bowled really well and bowled a lovely ball to clean up one of Benfleets batsman which helped, However some sensible batting by Benfleets number 7 who scored 16 and some late hitting from number 10 meant Benfleet just crept over the line by 8 runs.

Overall, a great game of cricket played in good spirit and these games are always great to be a part of In realisation, 4 less wides, 2 boundaries more or 2 less wickets would have meant we would have won the game at the end, but sadly it was not to be. We still have 3 games to play against Orsett, Wickford and Stanford-le-Hope so I look forward to what's to come. Well done boys and girls this week - lots to do at training on Friday - see you all then!
