Horndon-on-the-Hill 2nd XI v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 12.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 9 Wickets
Match report
Belhus visited Horndon on Saturday and, as par for the course for the last 10 weeks, were met with a very hot, glorious summer's day.
The start of the match was played to the backdrop of the spectacular concluding Test match events at Edgbaston. Horndon batted first on a very dry, dusty pitch, but were not distracted by the news of an England win. Instead, they batted very well to put on 70 for the 1st wicket and were looking good in the sapping heat. Then, however, as has been customary this season, Antonio made the initial breakthrough and was joined by Imran in bowling a peach of a ball that bowled Canavon the opener for a good 54. Horndon couldn't quite get off the leash and totalled 191 in their 45 overs. Matt Williams continued his good form of late with 3 for 41, and Sam George making his debut for the 2s, bowled well. His strong, tall action and positive, smiling manner suggests an enjoyment of the battle and a successful cricketing career. Well done Sam. The catch Wayne Read took to dismiss Marshall...catching it over his head and falling backwards, was brilliant.
In reply, after a very nice tea, Belhus set about chasing down the target...46 for the opening partnership settled nerves. Charlie Lewis then joined forces with his father, skipper John, to take the game away from Horndon. A 2nd wicket partnership of 149 settled matters with Charlie finishing with 43 not out and John Lewis 117 not out.
A very good win in very hot, demanding conditions.
