Orsett and Thurrock 2nd XI v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 12.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 1 Wicket

Match report Belhus 2nd XI 277-7
Orsett 2nd XI 278-9

On a scorching afternoon - the fourth consecutive weekend where the mercury nudged over 30C - Belhus travelled to Orsett for a local derby in a first versus fourth clash. Mark Sansom, stand-in captain for the injured John Lewis Jr, won the toss and elected to bat.

England's World Cup Quarter Final against Sweden (2-0) took place on the same afternoon, with the SNEL committee taking the unprecedented move to allow players to break for the football at the change of innings.

On a sun-baked pitch, Orsett and Thurrock's attack took the initiative. George Maidment was removed caught at first slip in the first over for 0, with number three batsman Charlie Lewis (12) following soon after. After Jake Wolfe (4) and Zak Wilson (20) were dismissed in quick succession, Belhus found themselves 40-4 inside 10 overs. Wayne Read took to the crease with typical grace and poise, joined quickly by Sansom. Together, they stopped the rot, seeing off the new ball and beginning to score freely. Read displayed an emblematic cavalier approach, full of well-balanced footwork and positive work on the off side. Sansom batted smoothly and the pair moved to a partnership of 195 to bring the innings to a respectable total of 277. Read was adjudged LBW for 86 and Sansom was run-out in the final over on 96.

Belhus made early inroads into the Orsett and Thurrock batting line up, with a superb spell of straight bowling from Darrell, the season's best bowler thus far. Introduced into the attack as fourth change, Braydon Scarlett found his rhythm immediately, settling in for a spell showing immaculate length and managing to manufacture decent turn from the tired pitch. Orsett and Thurrock captain Matt Hills anchored the innings, despite being dropped on 8 and again on 40. He ended with a score of 88 after being superbly caught by Read at cover. On Hills' departure, Orsett and Thurrock required a run a ball, which after more tidy bowling from Scarlett and Deepak Sinha, left them needing 8 from the final over. Two singles left 6 required from the final ball of the game. Number 11 batsman Callum Owen made a decent contact, clearing the mid-wicket boundary by a foot.

A very tough loss for Belhus, but a superb, well-balanced game of cricket full of intrigue, ebb and flow of momentum.
