WEST ESSEX* v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 12.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 88 Runs

Match report Belhus 2nd XI 295-3
West Essex 2nd XI 207

Belhus visited West Essex on Saturday in the knowledge that they faced historically tough opposition who were top of the table.

Having lost the fifth consecutive toss of the SNEL League season, Belhus were inserted on a green wicket. The low bounce evident in the pitch resulted in the early loss of a wicket, but a 2nd wicket partnership of 80 by the dogged Antonio Darrell (86) and a fluent 48 by George Maidment put Belhus back on course. At drinks after 25 overs the match was evenly balanced but then, in the 29th over, Dan Dreher marched to the wicket. Playing his last innings before his back operation, he tore into the West Essex attack like a latter-day Ian Botham. Driving, cutting and pulling with immense power, he reached 50 off 35 balls and 100 off 51 balls, establishing the club record fastest century in the process. His innings included 9 fours and 8 sixes. A brilliant exhibition of strokeplay that was a joy to watch. Belhus declared on 295 for 3 after 49 overs. The last 24 overs after the drinks break yielded 208 runs. Tea was taken in the knowledge that a fine score had been posted but West Essex would not go down without a fight.

In reply, West Essex set off like a train - 87 for the 1st wicket off 10 overs with the opener H.Khan smashing 68 off 38 balls in rustic fashion. However, the introduction of Darrell and Deepak Sinha changed the game as Antonio (2 for 36) took out the belligerent opener and Deepak spun a web of flight and guile to take 5 for 51 in 14 controlled overs. West Essex offered resistance but Imran came back into the attack to mop up the tail by taking 3 for 56 and also treated us to a brilliant running catch on the long on boundary. Mark Sansom took 3 good catches behind the stumps.

An excellent team performance that garnered 25 points and top spot in the Division after 5 games. Players are performing well and are bringing results. Well done Belhus.

John Lewis (2nd XI Captain).
