West Essex v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned - Rain
Match report
Going into this game, Belhus needed to win well and hope that Harlow (in 2nd place) would slip up to have a chance of being promoted. Unfortunately, the weather scuppered all hopes of this after Belhus had in the first part of the game manoeuvred themselvea into a position where 25 points looked a distinct and probable outcome.
Batting first on a pitch offering erratic, steep bounce, Belhus struggled to 56 for 4 and then 109 for 5 but good knocks of 49 by Charlie Lewis, a rapid 45 by Chris Baker and 65 not out by skipper John Lewis moved Belhus rapidly to 221 for 8 in 38 overs. 16 from Wayne Read saw him reach 1,000 club runs for the season.
In reply, West Essex lost 3 early wickets to the swing and seam of the ever-dependable Imran and were interestingly placed at 86 for 3 when the heavens opened.
A very disappointing end to what had been a good season for the 2s, including 5 wins and the aforementioned draw in the last 7 games. Some people have said to me that we were unlucky not to go up but, on reflection, I feel that if we were good enough we would have - but we didn't consistently perform during the season and that cost us in the final reckoning.
I would like to thank especially Julie Whitlock, Mike Squires and Cliff Cansdale for scoring and umpiring in most of the games. It makes a huge difference to the success of the side and the attitude of the opposition when they know that Belhus have qualified, competent officials and a tea lady in Jane Baker who produces teas fit for the Queen of England. Thank you.
