Shepherd Neame Essex League 14th May 2016

On a distinctly chilly afternoon, Harlow won the toss in this Shepherd Neame Essex League match and inserted Belhus on a Harlow pitch that was green from the midweek rain. Good attentive batting from Wayne Read and Stuart Morris suppressed the Harlow opening attack as they posted 45 for the opening partnership. However, Belhus then managed to collapse to 84 for 5 and were teetering. From this difficult position, Charlie Lewis (67) and Chris Baker (43) contrived to forge a game-changing partnership of 82 runs and the clean striking of the pair was eye-catching. Further cameos from Imran Mohammed (27) and Gary Sanderson (17) lifted the score to 242 off 44.4 overs which was a fine effort in the circumstances. Tea was taken with an expectant air.

In reply, Harlow were soon in trouble from the testing seam and swing bowling of Imran Mohammed (2 for 24). However, the entrance of Gary Sanderson and then Matthew Williams really moved the game on apace. 44 for 2 soon became 76 for 4 and it was at this stage that the game entered its spectacular and fulminating conclusion.

In the space of just 9 deliveries Sanderson and Williams took individual hat tricks and the last 4 wickets fell in successive balls. Full, seam-up and swing bowling had bowled out Harlow for 83 in 21.1 overs and gave Belhus a winning margin of 159 runs. A wonderful effort.

Two hat tricks in the same innings by different bowlers has never (to date) been recorded in Test, First Class or ODI matches. Nor, from our research and enquiries, has the feat ever been performed in club cricket in England. Gary and Matthew are therefore the proud holders of a unique National bowling record. Excellent.
