Horndon-on-the-Hill v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 27 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 9 Wickets
Match report
Our First XI secured the Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two title with a convincing 9 wickets victory over local rivals Horndon-on-the-Hill.
Belhus fielde first and began a little sluggishly - perhaps the previous week's defeat to Wickford still fresh in the memory. Chances came and went as a breakthrough was hard to find. Dan Dreher eventually made the breakthrough removing Tom Stone who had batted well. With the first ball of his next over he claimed Pettes for a golden duck and Belhus were off and running. Overseas player Damien Sweet played aggressively for his 22, but succumbed to the spin of Joe Joyce bringing up Belhus's first point in 2 weeks.
Captain Gary Ginsburgh joined Canavon at the crease who was proving a tough nut to crack. A moment of magic from leg-spinner Brad Mason proved a crucial turning point in the game - by catching opener Mike Canavon with a running one-handed catch on the boundary off the bowling of Joyce. Despite some fine hitting from the skipper who finished on 72 not out, the tail was unable to wag and Horndon finished on 213-8 in their 50 overs. Sanderson, Joyce, Dreher and Mason all finished with two wickets apiece.
So the equation was simple. Belhus needed 214 to win the match and guarantee promotion to Division One for the first time in the club's short spell in the SNEL. It was soon clear that the result was not going to be an issue as the Joyce brothers continued to do what they have done all season - score runs! The 50 partnership came up with only 1 boundary to their names. However, the 100 flowed much quicker and soon the 150 was up and attention was beginning to turn to the game between second and third place. Joe Joyce holed out to Stitson for 76 which proved to be the only blemish in the Belhus reply as Wells came in and finished off the job in quick time as skipper Danny Joyce carried his bat for a magnificent hundred. 12 overs were remaining when the winning runs were struck.
So Belhus had finally beaten Horndon for the first time in eight previous attempts and in so doing, had secured promotion. With mobile 'phones at the ready, Belhus knew that a Gidea Park & Romford victory over Oakfield Parkonians would secure the title. Live updates were provided thanks to the GPR feed and at around 7.30pm, GPR had indeed won and in so doing secured Belhus' first title in the SNEL having been promoted to Division Two in 2011 as runners-up. Celebrations began and thoughts turned to the other Belhus XIs who all remained in with a chance of promotion.
Huge congratulations to Danny Joyce and all of the players who have participated in this Championship winning season.
