Mandrake Khan had made his debut for the Club the previous week (for the 2nd XI when he took 8 wickets including a hat trick). So he was given the new ball and opened the bowling in this match taking 5 for 23 from his 12 overs (the maximum number of overs per bowler in this Lillywhite Frowd League). Wicketkeeper Steve Huckstepp took four catches off Mandrake (considered by many to be one of the quickest bowlers ever to play for the Club) and we bowled out Stanford-le-Hope for 134.

After tea, and with a pretty decent batting line-up, we were confident of chasing down the modest target. Mathew Lewis Snr stroked a fine 48, and although Robert Waters and Cliff Cansdale shared a 26-runs last wicket partnership, we came up just short and lost by 6 runs in what was an exciting and memorable match.
