Shoreham by Sea v Belhus Cricket Club Youth Tour on Mon 15 Aug 1977 at 2.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 39 Runs
Match report
Shoreham by Sea Colts 140-6 dec
Belhus Colts 101 all out
This was the very first youth tour match at Belhus Cricket Club. The tour was organised by Cliff Cansdale with John Rowell acting as minibus driver and general team manager. In the club's photo gallery of youth tour pictures, available on this website, the first picture shows the old (it was new then!) Ford Transit minibus being loaded up. The photograph was taken in Usk Road, Aveley, the first of several local pick-up points for our players. The building on the left is the Marisco public house, now known as the Park Tavern.
This first fixture was organised with Tony King of Shoreham by Sea CC, Tony had given many valuable years of service to the club, especially towards its youth section. In fact when we began organising further tours thirty years later, Tony's name could still be proudly seen in the club directories of the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival, an organisation which, to this day, thrives in its organisation of junior cricket during the school Summer holidays.
The Belhus Tour party was based at a guest house in Eastbourne, it was called "Braemar" and was at 68 Seaside Road. The youngest of the tour party was a ten-year old David Webb, who went on to play for Essex U19s and enjoyed a good playing 'career' at a high standard of club cricket.
One of our players, Trevor Pighini, was dismissed from the very first ball bowled to a Belhus batsman on a youth tour. His wicket is still spoken about today.
