We had thought that the match against Lodge School might not be the strongest of the tour. How wrong we were. The cricket master, Patrick Frost, had granted an afternoon off for the whole school to turn out and watch what was an historic match for them - a game against an overseas touring team. Batting first, the schoolboys racked up a total of 221 with Bob Young taking 4 for 61.

In our reply after tea, we didn't get off to the best of starts - at one point we had lost 5 wickets for just 6 runs - and not a single run had been scored from the bat! Six of our batsmen were dismissed for 'ducks' but, coming in at number 7, skipper John Bacon batted heroically for a dogged 54. In the event, we suffered a heavy 122-runs defeat in this 35-overs match - much to the pleasure of dozens of cheering schoolchildren!
