Bexhill (Sussex) v Belhus Cricket Club Youth Tour on Thu 08 Aug 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 4 Wickets
Match report
Belhus U13 198-7 dec
Bexhill U13 199-7
The quality of the cricket matched the fine weather as the tourists enjoyed their day at Bexhill, with the Polgate ground being just a short walk from the promenade. In was exactly forty years ago - to the day - when Belhus previously played at the Polgate ground, that being a first eleven fixture. The hosts edged to a three-wicket victory with just four balls to spare when number seven home batsman Cheshire scrambled two runs off the second ball of Jude Ranson's third over to conclude a thrilling contest. The compulsory retirement level was set at 35 for this match which Tyler Kohl of Belhus reached with an impressive innings of good technique. He struck six boundaries in scoring 37 not out while there were further solid contributions from Liam Waters 15, Joshua Reynolds 17, Jude Ranson 25, and Ben Garwood, who hit a masterful 34 and hit the same number of fours as his colleague Kohl. For Bexhill, Luke Warner-Melbourn picked up 2-32 from five overs. He may have been slightly expensive but collected the wickets of Reynolds and Garwood. Monty Haddow, Adam Rispoli and Sam Walley bagged one wicket each.
In the post-tea session, Tom Samuel and Rispoli started the Bexhill innings like a house on fire. They put on 70 for the first wicket as Samuel hit 32 and Rispoli added 24. Samuel was eventually removed courtesy of a catch by wicketkeeper Liam Waters off the bowling of Ranson from the sea end, while his partner was caught by George Benson off Garwood. The number three batsman, Paul Crittenden, kept up the momentum with a further 24 runs until he was trapped leg before, again by Benson (2-20). Alastair Kent was dispatched to the pavilion, second ball for nought when Ranson (2-14) demolished his furniture, but a further fightback took place as Sam Walley hit a valuable 13. The Belhus performance began to sag and it was Cheshire who produced a County-class performance with an undefeated 16 runs to secure the win for Bexhill. The most economical Belhus bowler was George Alder, whose two overs, one of which was maiden, cost just two runs. Kohl came in a tight second in the economy stakes by picking up 1-5 from four overs (two maidens). Zak Wilson and Garwood finished their spells with 1-35 and 1-24 respectively.
As in previous matches for this tour, this fixture was played on a twelve-a-side basis, with Billy Turley being the player who turned out for the home side. He performed admirably well. He helped Bexhill edge towards victory by striking one boundary in an innings of seven runs as the runs mounted. He also caught out Jamie Fairweather and had one of our key batsmen, Ranson, trapped leg before to finish with figures of 1-16 from three overs.
