Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v WEST HAM UNITED FC* on Sun 10 Aug 1969 at 2.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 42 Runs
Match report
The visit of West Ham United FC to Belhus Park on 10th August 1969 drew an estimated 2,000 spectators.
As West Ham had beaten Newcastle United the previous day (and won 1-0), they were in confident mood. Their team included Bobby Moore (who had once been offered terms by Essex CCC but chose football instead) and Geoff Hurst (who played 1 first class match for Essex CCC in 1962). They therefore had a pretty useful side and, being professional footballers, were highly competitive.
When West Ham batted, we had them on the rack at 94 for 9 but a last wicket stand of 71 between Stuart Morgan and Roger Cross enabled WHU to reach a total of 165. Frank Lampard Senior and his brother-in-law Harry Redknapp were both dismissed for 'ducks'.
In reply, Belhus were well placed at 95 for 4 but Bobby Moore was brought on to bowl his off-spin and proceeded to take 5 for 16 from 7 overs. Belhus then collapsed to 123 all out and we lost by42 runs.
It was a memorable Sunday afternoon. From Belhus Park, WHU moved to Upton Park the following day - and won their league match against Chelsea FC (2-0). 3 wins in 3 days must be a West Ham record!
