The day after their return from the tour to Northern Ireland, our 1st XI were delighted to dismiss Tennyson for 68 after Don Pegler had taken 7 for 27.

In our run-chase after tea, our batsmen couldn't quite read the spin of Bhagwandin and capitulated to 40 all out - not one Belhus batsmen could reach double figures!

In fairness, it should be noted that there was a torrential downpour after the Tennyson innings and we didn't have covers in those days. Tea was taken early and as the pitch was far too wet to play on, the skippers agreed to cut a new pitch on the edge of the square. This part of the square had for some reason dried quickly - but it didn't play too well when Belhus batted on it. Andrew Merton recollected that the ball was "popping and shooting all over the place" and "made batting difficult". At least it provided a good excuse for the Belhus batsmen!
