Our 10-man team was easily beaten but the day was marred by an horrific injury to our skipper Bill Richards - a delivery lifted viciously while he was batting on an uneven pitch at Blackshots Playing Fields, Grays (notorious around this time for its dangerous pitches). Bill subsequently lost an eye - and that, sadly, proved the end of his playing career. A very popular chap was Bill.
