Stanford-le-Hope v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 28 Jul 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 199 Runs
Match report
Belhus 2nd XI 287-9
Stanford-le-Hope 2nd XI 88 all out
On a hot and muggy day, a bolstered Sunday 2's side arrived at Stanford Rec and stand-in Captain Scott Stonham promptly lost the toss but happily was asked to bat first. Stonham and Norris ambled to the crease and Norris wasted no time in finding the boundary and soon put the Stanford openers under some pressure. In the absence of the usual Sunday Captain, Stonham adopted the 'Mike Randall' approach to batting and by the time Norris was defeated by the Stanford 'bounce' for a quick-fire 35, Stonham was still on 2, much to the amusement of his team mates. This brought Greg Mendham to the crease who did a great job of maintaining the run-rate set by Norris. Stonham finally woke up and started to find the boundary before being caught and bowled by Easter for a well-crafted 26. In walked Stuart Farr and it was very nearly 'Out walked Stuart Farr' as a relatively easy chance was put down at cover from his first delivery. After that early scare, Farr settled and he and Mendham continued to find the boundary with 4s and 6s. Mendham eventually fell 'going for one big shot too many' caught by Sharp for an excellent 44. Farr followed shortly after to another one that stayed low, but the runs kept flowing as Jack Plane (38), Paul Newton (25) John Wilson (16) and Sam Hall (32) piled on the misery for Stanford with the top 8 batsmen all posting a score. Belhus Sunday 2s closed for an eye-popping 287 for 9 from 40 overs.
After a top grade tea, Belhus were back out into the sunshine to finish the job with Sam Hall and Cameron Blake opening the bowling to fine effect as runs were kept to a minimum. Sam Hall eventually made the breakthrough dismissing both openers with some fine seam bowling and finished with figures of 4 for 11 from his 7 overs. Not to be outdone, Jack Plane stepped up and bowled well to yield great figures of 4 for 8 from 5.1 overs. Also in the wickets was John Wilson with 2 for 5 from 4 overs. This was all ably backed by the tight but wicketless spin of Wilf Gansbuhler 0 for 13 (5 overs), Farr 0 for 5 (5 overs) and Norris 0 for 1 (4 overs).
Man of the Match - Sam Hall & Jack Plane shared the honours.
