Paul Hall struck a career best 91 as Belhus won this Shepherd Neame Essex League match by 34 runs on an excellent surface at Ockendon Recreation ground. Paul Newton finished on 32 not out which led to an intelligent declaration from Mike Squires, the home captain, as storm clouds gathered. However, after tea, the clouds dispersed but Squires had the confidence in his bowlers to dominate the visiting batsmen.

And so it proved, as the Hornchurch openers struggled to score runs and they appeared to be looking for a draw. Paul Whitlock bowled a dozen overs to take 2-20 which included no fewer than five maidens, John Forrest was equally mean with his 0-10 from eight overs (two maidens). Scott Stonham and Squires made inroads as they picked up two wickets each, despite Paul Newland eventually opening his shoulders for a fine innings which brought him 65 runs. Ewan Day hit the stumps with a fine throw from mid-wicket to claim one victim.
