The burning Essex Matchplay ambitions of this vibrant Belhus youth team were finally extinguished at the quarter-final stages by Bishops Stortford, despite a magnificent century from Carl Lees. He struck 13 fours in a stylish undefeated innings of 104. Stortford, with home advantage, were initially stunned as Belhus raced to 31 without loss off the first four overs, as the opening bowlers struggled to find any rhythm. But as Waring and Burslem introduced some flight and guile into the attack, the run-rate was significantly slowed as the following eleven overs went for only 14 runs. Waring finished with 3-21 from eight overs (four maidens) while Burslem picked up 2-32 from his eight-over allotment which included two maidens.

After the break and a slow start by the hosts, the Hertfordshire lads produced a quality display of running between the wickets and were particularly adept with running quick singles. This kept the scoreboard ticking as Stortford edged confidently, if unspectacularly, towards the target. Burslem finished on 49 not out and Gallap hit 47. For Belhus, Lees completed a memorable afternoon with 2-36 from six overs while skipper Ryan Wells and Elliott Playle picked up one wicket each.
