Belhus paceman Connor Day brought some unwelcome early gifts for both Wickford openers in this Shepherd Neame Essex Legue division two match at North Stifford on Saturday. Day sent both Naeem Uddin and Matthew Nobes back to the pavilion with only six runs on the board. Wickford continued to struggle, but from a position of 49-4, Tanvir Alam cut loose to strike a magnificent undefeated 98 in an innings which included six fours and five fours from 129 balls faced. Day finished with 3-43 from eight overs, but the most economical Belhus bowler was Daniel Dreher, with an impressive 2-27 from ten overs (one maiden). Dale Kenyon, Martin Guilbert and Billy Winter picked up one wicket each for the home side.

In the Belhus reply, Michael Fogg top scored in a middle order which featured two run-outs, Fogg being one of the victims after he had scored 40 runs. Richard Day contributed 30 as he and Fogg put on 84 for the fourth wicket. But a collapse ensued which resulted in Belhus tasting defeat for the first time in seven weeks. For Wickford, Nobes atoned for his batting failure to claim 3-26 from 8.5 overs (three maidens). Daniel Pryke and Andy Baker picked up two wickets each, but Jamie Went headed the economy stakes as his six wicketless overs cost just nine runs and included three maidens.
