It was the first round of matches in Essex County Cricket Board's U16 Matchplay competition on Bank Holiday Monday. Belhus overcame Shenfield by 45 runs on their North Stifford ground, due to some quality batting from Carl Lees and Ben Kent, who scored 42 and 48 respectively. However, only one further batsman made double figures for the home side, being Jake Wolfe with 15, as Joe Massey claimed 3-30 and Oliver Castell bagged 3-28 to keep Shenfield in contention.

Belhus started with the ball in the post-tea session as brightly as they had started with the bat earlier, opening bowlers Mathew Lewis and Jack Martin-Hussey were both firing on all cylinders. The Shenfield batsmen struggled for the first twenty overs or so as Lewis finished with 4-18 from eight overs of genuine pace while Martin-Hussey generated plenty of swing for no reward but was hugely economical; his eight overs cost just 20 runs. With Sam Hall picking up 4-27, Belhus appeared to be in the driving seat but they faced strong resistance from Alex Rickenbach until he was left high and dry with 47 not out. Massey completed a fine all-round match for Shenfield with 27 runs to his name.
