Harold Wood v Belhus Cricket Club Midweek 1st XI on Wed 23 May 2012 at 6pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 3 Runs
Match report
Harold Wood 135
Belhus 132-7
Belhus failed to overhaul their hosts total by just three runs in this opening Shepherd Neame League T20 match at Harold Wood on Wednesday evening. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the home opening partnership of Thomas Clarke and Abdul Rehman put on 49 runs until the former was caught by Luke Clements at short third man off the bowling of Richard Waters for 29. Rehman followed just two runs later for a personal score of eleven, when he was bowled by Billy Winter. Both Belhus bowlers arrested the run rate with their steady, accurate bowling. Waters picked up 2-23 from four overs while Winter was even less generous, finishing with figures of 1-15, also from four overs. Wood's number three batsman Craig Sampson's dismissal for just six runs was identical to that of his colleague Rehman, but then Peter Clarke cut loose towards the end of the innings and finished undefeated on 41.
Belhus, wearing their coloured T20 kit (sponsored by Rainham Industrial Services) for the first time, started with a flurry of aggressive shots. Skipper Wayne Read flourished in the opening exchanges and put on 43 for the first wicket with Joe Joyce until Read was stumped by Charlie Rolls off the bowling of Kevin Gibson for 26. Richard Day demonstrated similar aggression in matching his captain's score until he was bowled by Shahzad Hafeez (2-21, four overs), but no visiting player was able to dominate the bowling for a sustained period of time. Towards the end of the innings, Billy Winter gave Belhus a fighting chance with some excellent off-side shots to finish with 16 not out, but Harold Wood held their nerve to obtain a narrow win. Earlier, Joe Joyce contributed 16 runs, brother Danny scored 20, while Ryan Wells was unfortunate to be run out for 11, six of which came from a superb hit over the wide mid-on boundary. Pick of the Harold Wood bowling was Waqas Shafique, 2-17 from four overs.
