Belhus slithered to a six-wicket defeat on their own patch on Saturday in the Shepherd Neame Essex League. Not only was the match lost, but opportunity of promotion is now an impossibility as their season imploded at the hands of Buckhurst Hill at South Ockendon Recreation Ground. The last six home batsmen contributed a meagre four runs between them, but in the bowler-friendly conditions, Stephen Huckstepp showed great tenacity with a fine knock of 65, until he was yorked by a "dream ball" from Ali Azad, who extorted great damage in the Belhus innings by taking 5-14 from 6.5 overs. Jim Robertson with 18 runs and Stuart Morris, 13, were the only other batsmen in double figures in an otherwise sorry display with the unquestionably weeping willow.

After tea, Cliff Cansdale picked up all four Buckhurst Hill wickets to fall at a cost of 29 runs from 9.1 overs, but it mattered little as opener Leslie Richards scored 32 and Azad completed a fine all-round game by scoring 26.
