Fives & Heronians v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 15 Aug 2010 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 3 Runs
Match report
Belhus 1st 237-6
Fives and Heronians 1st 234 all out
Billy Winter struck his third century of his playing career in this extraordinary performance at The Paddock on Sunday. Belhus started off their innings in the worst possible way, losing Joe Joyce and their skipper, Chris Baker, in the first over, to leave the visitors tottering with only seven runs on the board. But in this memorable fixture, Ryan Wells joined Winter as these two put on 140 for the third wicket. Winter was undefeated on 106 not out and he struck one six and no fewer than 16 fours, while Wells hit seven boundaries in a fine 53. Danny Norris contributed 27 in the middle order.
Belhus achieved a big boost when Ian Joyce dismissed Fives' overseas player Irfan Ahmed for just 28. Pakistan-born Ahmed plays international cricket for Hong Kong and won the Ben Hollioake Trophy for the leading player at the Hong Kong Cricket sixes in 2009. However, Buxton became the game's second centurion with 111, until he was caught at long-on by Norris. In the run chase that ensued amid evaporation of the overs remaining, the home side lost crucial wickets. With the last pair at the crease, ten runs were required from left-arm spinner Brian Edwards. His first ball was dispatched out of the ground over mid-wicket but with the very next ball, a drive to deep long on was fittingly pouched by Winter, to leave Belhus winners by three runs. Edwards finished with 3-19 from 4.3 overs, while Luke Clements and Cliff Cansdale picked up two wickets apiece.
