It was an historic day for Belhus Cricket Club on Saturday as the club was able to field a 5th XI for the very first time. At the Basildon Fords sports ground, Orsett were the home side and both teams fielded a host of young players as Jan Luitsz won the toss for Orsett and invited Belhus, led by experienced campaigner Jim Robertson, to bat first on what turned out to be a very slow pitch.

Belhus lost opener Jack Thomas in the first over and when Rob Panteli fell for a duck to an excellent catch by young Scott Plom the visitors were in trouble. The gloom worsened for Belhus as Alfie Rowley and Daniel Dreher fell in quick succession and soon Belhus were reeling at 18 for 5. Connor Thomas followed soon after and the match was looking like being over very quickly with Belhus on 26-6. Skipper Robertson dug in and was assisted by Mark Thomas in taking the score to 47 before the latter was caught behind. Robertson was joined by Mike Squires and this partnership was to prove crucial. Robertson was to top score in the match compiling a patient 39 from 64 balls including 4 boundaries while Squires made 27 as the pair added 57 for the eighth wicket. When Robertson was caught off the bowling of Pound with the score on 104, Belhus had at least a semblance of a target. Mike Squires soon followed and the innings completed.

The total did not look intimidating but run-scoring was hard work on the slow pitch and with the outfield sluggish runs were hard to come by as Orsett were to find out. Belhus came out of the traps quickly with the ball as young seamer Mitchell Arthur (who was called up at the last minute due to a withdrawal) created havoc taking 3 for 11 from 4 overs to have Orsett in trouble at 21-3. Father and son Mark and Connor Thomas grabbed a wicket apiece to keep the pressure on, and Jack Panteli produced a fine display of leg spin bowling, taking 3 for 15 from his 10 overs. With Orsett a long way from the target, young Alfie Rowley took 2 wickets in successive deliveries before Jack Panteli took the final wicket to wrap up a fine victory for Belhus. Credit to 'keeper Rob Panteli who snatched two stumpings.

Skipper Robertson was elated "Both teams had a lot of young talent on display which was great to see. Credit to Orsett who had also had very young side but they performed really well on a tough track. They certainly have some talented young players. Our youngsters performed exceptionally well particularly Jack Panteli and Mitchell Arthur. It was a good game to win but it was a victory for cricket in the district in that both clubs are producing so much young talent. The fact that both clubs are able to field five sides is a fantastic credit to the structure and voluntary effort from both clubs".
