Belhus Cricket Club Midweek XI v MCC on Wed 21 Aug 2019 at 11.30am
Match was Drawn
Match report
MCC 220 all out (Alex Tredgett 63 Jed Cawkwell 54 Roy Heffernan 5 for 31)
Belhus 218-9 (Billy Winter 56)
This was the club's inaugural match against MCC, the world's pre-eminent private cricket club. The MCC team was captained for the day by Belhus's John Lewis Jnr. The Belhus captain was Danny Joyce.
With a traditional 11.30am start, MCC batted first and openers Jed Campbell (54) and Alex Tredgett (63) batted superbly to post an opening partnership of 129. But then came a major collapse as 6 wickets fell for just 15 runs and the scoreboard showed 144 for 6. And then Guy Barraclough came to the crease and batted stoically for 30 not out to enable his side to reach a respectable total of 220 all out. Spinner Roy Heffernan bowled with accuracy and guile to capture 5 for 31 from his 11 overs.
In their run-chase, the hosts also got off to a good start as Michael Fogg and Billy Winter put on 59 for the first wicket and then all of the Belhus batsmen made a contribution with Mark Sansom to the fore with a fine 36. But as Belhus wickets fell, they found themselves precariously perched on 190 for 9, and MCC looked set for victory. However, they were thwarted by a last wicket stand of 28 between skipper Danny Joyce (17*) and Matthew Williams (9*) who almost saw Belhus home to a win as their innings closed on 218 for 9. A draw was an eminently fair result.
The match was enjoyed by a good number of spectators who witnessed an exciting game of cricket played in fine spirit on a glorious summer's day on North Stifford Village Green. In the 200+ years history of cricket in the district, it was the very first time that a club in the borough of Thurrock had been honoured with a fixture against the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club.
It was a memorable, historic day for Belhus Cricket Club who brought much credit to the borough.
