Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Springfield 2nd XI on Sun 31 Jul 2022 at 1.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 1 Wicket
Match report
Springfield 195 for 9
Belhus 196 for 9
Belhus beat Springfield on the last ball of the match in what was an excellent finish to a really good game of cricket played, win or lose. Batting first, Springfield posted a very competitive 195 in their 40 overs, as Father and son M Trim and R Trim both retired out on 51 and 50, P Durrant got 23, S Dyson 18, as Belhus then bowled very well to claw the total back down, B Gladman picking up 2 for 14, and M Yassar 3 for 14 off 7.
195 was always going to be a testing total for the young side Belhus had, and losing Tyler Robertson to a freakish run out for 4 didn't help, but Teddy Waters steadied the ship with 37 from 56 balls and Matthew Friend scored 19, Michael Cansdale 15. But at 104 for 6 in 25 overs, we were in a little bit of trouble, M Yassar wasn't ready, so Skipper W Read went in to join Afra Mohammed, who batted very well for 11 before she was out, as the pair put on 39, so at 143 for 7 with 32 overs gone, the game could have gone either way, with us just needing over a run a ball.
M Yassar joined Read and they put on 31, as Yassar fell for 8 and then Read was run out for his fine 49, that got us back into the game, but at 178 for 9 with only 2 overs left and young Ben Gladman in with Martin Mailey, Springfield must have fancied their chances of wrapping up the win. 5 came from the 39th over, so the stage was set, 13 required from the last over.
Single from Martin, single from Ben, 11 from 4 balls, Martin then cracks 2 fours, so 3 from 2, he then could only get a single, so with all 3 results possible, and the pressure was on young Ben, now on strike and being watched by a healthy crowed waiting in anticipation, all fielders tight in on the one. A Sham bowls, Ben has a big swing and chinese cuts it down to fine leg and the 2 was never in doubt and the victory was ours.
Credit to both teams for an excellent match that was played in superb spirits.
