This was the club's first match against Clacton at Vista Road (it was then an Essex County Ground). The captain of Clacton was Arnold Quick the former Essex 2nd XI captain who was also chairman of Essex CCC from 1972 to 1976.

In this all-day game, our left-arm medium-pacer David Medlock bowled 28 overs - the club record for the number of overs bowled by a Belhus bowler in an innings. John Stuck top-scored for Clacton with 48.

Chasing Clacton's total of 190 for 5 (off of 59 overs), we were struggling at 56 for 6. But then Jim Donovan first combined with Andrew Merton in a magnificent 45-runs 7th wicket partnership, and then with Colin Clayton in a stubborn 43-runs 8th wicket partnership. Between these three stars, they almost saw us home to a draw. An excellent and memorable match.
