Belhus Cricket Club Lost By 27 Runs

Match report The sun finally came out on the Wednesday of the tour as Belhus visited the lovely ground of Norfolk's highly successful Vauxhall Mallards CC. The home side batted first and Belhus made a quick breakthrough as opener Finney fell for a duck, caught by Richard Dopson off the bowling of Paul Whitlock. Robinson did get the runs flowing with a fine 54 before Whitlock struck again supported by a fine one handed catch from Roy Heffernan. Indeed Whitlock's spell proved vital to the Belhus cause as he went on to take five wickets (indeed the top five Mallards batsmen) - the young seam bowler is having an excellent season and he clearly enjoys touring as he ended up with figures of 5-51 from 12 overs including a fine caught and bwled. Jim Banner (2-48) Richard Dopson (2-25) and Roy Heffernan (1-70) all worked hard to assist in restricting the home side to 240 all out. Considering the Norfolk side had several first eleven cricketers playing and two overseas pro's it was a great effort from Belhus who supported their bowlers with excellent catching - Heffernan bagging three catches whilst Dopson and Read claimed two each. Amos (45) Barton (39) and Purton (28) were the mainstays of the Mallards innings following Robinson's half century.
Belhus were under the cosh early in their reply losing openers Morris (5) and Thompson (10) to the impressive quick bowling of Ing (2-20) but Belhus did not fold up and there were solid contributions from Ben Marns (23)including five fours, Jim Robertson (24)including 1 six, a five and two fours, Richard Dopson (29) including 1 six and 5 fours, top scorer Roy Heffernan (33) including five fours and Jim Banner (26*) including five fours. Whilst the Belhus chase never threatened to overhaul the Mallards score a reply of 213-9 was certainly respectable. Although a defeat by 27 runs was disappointing, a full days cricket at a superb venue was a fitting if somewhat belated kick start to the tour.
